Unfortunately, the majority of romance scams are from men on women – not always, but certainly it is much more common.
I did end up speaking to someone whom I believe was grooming me about 15 years ago and although I had some suspicions, it wasn’t until I got charged for phoning what seemed like a UK number that I had enough. I did speak to the man and we had some quite pleasant chats, but something didn’t feel right.
However, I have had many clients who have been tricked regarding a potential romance, although fortunately none have lost significant amounts of money.
I have a different take on the situation as it seemed so strange that so many intelligent and smart women would get tricked. And there is a novel by Peter James “Dead at First Sight” that concurs with my belief.
As many of the romance scams operate out of Africa, the Africans do have a tool for which we in the Western World generally have no defence and that is that they use magic. According to Peter James, when a romance scam finds a victim, there is a group of people who do controlling magic on the victim which is why the victims say things like:-
